Conversations in Management: Horatio Alger - ‘Ragged Rick’

“You must drop that name, ‘Ragged Dick’, and think of yourself now as “Richard Hunter, Esq.”

“A young gentleman on his way to fame and fortune,” added Fosdick.

-From Ragged Dick, by Horatio Alger

These are the closing lines from Ragged Dick, Horatio Alger’s first rags-to-riches story. Its publication in 1867 would be followed by 133 similar books written over a thirty-three year span. The stories were meant to be inspirational and to offer not only hope, but a blueprint for success to thousands of impoverished American and immigrant boys. In that regard they succeeded admirably and ended up stamping self-reliance indelibly on the American psyche.

Alger was an unlikely teller of such tales. New England bred, Harvard educated and well traveled through Europe, he was unprepared for the squalor he found in New York City. He had moved there in 1866 to restart a writing career that, to this point, had lacked both focus and success. Upon arriving, he was immediately drawn to the plight of the over 60,000 orphaned and abandoned children fending for themselves on the city streets. They earned small amounts of money by shining shoes,

What's Your Reserve?

What’s Your Reserve?

What is your current reserve? How long could your business survive if Гимн the work dried up? How much work do you ‘have to’ take because you need the money? So many of us small businesses live with a reality of boom and Arcata homes bust – one month we are rolling in work, the next we have none…but we do have the money from last month, so we’re ok…until the month of no work catches up with us!

Recognise this pattern? HP Pavilion dv6850er How many times have you thought ‘I’ve cracked it!’ only to have a lean spell shortly after?! We often then compound the problem by spending the money that we earn – either back into the business or on things we deserve because we work hard! For many of us, the money averages out so that our bills are covered and we have ‘enough’ to continue as a business. Which is great…but stressful. And if anything happens, panic can set in because there is no reserve.

When work comes in, we have to take it whether we want to or not, because we need the work and the money. While this is one way to build a business, it is not the only (or in my opinion the best) way. Of course, there are times when a client is too good to turn down, and when financial considerations mean you really must take what you can get.

Computer Obsession: Is It A Real Addiction?

Psychologists disagree as to whether computer obsession is even a real addiction. Although many therapists treat “computer addiction” as a disorder, other therapists claim that computer obsession is more like pathological gambling than a true addiction, because it involves a behavioral failure to resist an impulse and not a physical dependence upon some sort of substance.

There have been few studies on the fairly recent phenomenon of computer addiction, so Barco LC-47 there are few scientific facts to quote. However, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that seems to suggest that computer addiction not only exists, but may actually be close to an epidemic worldwide. Most heavy computer users are aware of their own problem or know of other people who seem to display all the symptoms of an addicted personality.

Like many drug users, computer addicts have a tendency to lose track of time when they’re online. They can spend entire days in cyberspace and not realize it. They go without sleep, they forget to eat, they stay home from work or school, and they ignore Samsung G810

Marketing Your Business and Services through Presentations

If you have read any information about successful marketing, you know that the only way to find clients and sell your services / business is to “get the word out.” One of the most effective approaches is to share information about what you do by giving presentations to Samsung SGH-S342i groups, organizations, HTC Touch Dual P5500 companies and associations.

There are many groups and organizations that welcome free speakers who have interesting and helpful information to share. Kiwanis and Rotary clubs offer a good venue for starting, Aromas homes because they are usually in need of speakers, are comfortable and welcoming listeners, and also — if you are good — will recommend HTC Touch Dual P5500 you to other Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

Genuine Competence Increases Your Ability To Influence Others

Genuine Competence Increases Your Ability To Influence Others

Remember that the more consistent and congruent you are in every aspect of your life, the more honest and genuine you’re perceived to be. If you believe in your message, you’ll practice what you preach. If you HTC S740 practice what you preach, you’ll be more authentic, and the door of trust will swing open for you. When you possess congruency, there’s no need to manipulate or camouflage.

Trust increases when others can see that your words match your actions. This is called congruence. Agreement and harmony in verbal and nonverbal messages increases your ability to influence. When congruence is lacking, a red flag is raised and, either consciously or subconsciously, your listener will not give you his or her full trust. It’s like the clothes you wear every day. If your clothes match well, usually no one really pays attention to what you’re wearing. If your clothing choices clash and are mismatched, they will be the only thing people notice and remember about you.

As one author put it, “People love someone who seems to believe in what he is doing, who is a man of principle. It doesn’t seem to matter what the principle is, as long as he holds to it against all odds, expresses himself clearly, does not get defensive, and sticks to his story.” Most incongruities are found in our Vitek VT-1829 body language. Countless studies demonstrate that when body language is incongruent or in disagreement with the message, the body language will always be believed over the message. You body language must be congruent with your message and must be used to support or enhance your message.

Are you congruent with your О где же ты, брат? history, your last interaction, and your reputation? Are your emotions congruent with your message? What are your audience’s expectations of you and your message? When your past history and your message don’t match, flags of incongruities will wave in your prospects’ faces. Suspicion will be roused and your prospect will start to look for things that are wrong with you or your message. This inconsistency will decrease your ability to gain influence and trust. We are natural lie detectors. When you attempt to fake congruence, you will spend your time and energy trying to fake your message.

Body Language: Attracts or Distracts. Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly reading and being read by others. Even without the utterance of words, the language of the body speaks volumes.
